Hardwood Floor Protection

Floor Damage Can Come From Chairs and Furniture

Clay Floors Hardwood Floor Protection Tips

For over 30 years, Keith Clay Floors, has been providing Floor Restoration, Floor Refinishing, and  Floor Installation here in the Dallas metroplex. Hardwood floors never really fade from the minds of most who enjoy their warmth in their homes, offices, entry ways, and even in commercial settings where rugs are used in high traffic areas. For many of you here in Dallas, we are your favorite Dallas Floor Installer. We invite you to consider keeping your hardwood floors protected. With simple best practices and good habits, you can keep your investment beautiful over the life of your floor.

Beautiful hardwood floors still rank one of the highest in leading sales here in our country. Hardwood floor care and floor maintenance, can mean particular attention is placed on protecting all types of hardwood floors against outside contaminants and making sure family in the home is aware of best maintenance practices and habits. In reality, floor care culprits are sometimes overlooked as far as possible damage is concerned. Furniture, and chair legs fit this category of being overlooked. Potential sources creep in and are often unprotected because chair legs can still press grit, grime and debris in the floor finish. Scratches and gouges usually appear with heavier pieces of furniture, but the truth is furniture and chair legs can be made more floor friendly. Most especially if you do not have rugs in traffic areas of your highly traffic rooms. Truth is, we have many solutions to share with you.

Types Of Furniture Protection

One of the most popular types of chair leg protection is the chair glide, which is often called the furniture pad. It's simple and are constructed from many types of materials. They are put on the bottoms of your chair legs. Cost and protection vary with the supplier.

Another very secure type of let protection is the tap on nail on pad. Small nails or screws mean they aren't moving with regular use. Tap on pads use different types of materials which touch the floor and proper installation is critical to success here.

The peel and stick self adhesive pads, made of felt or rubber are the most popular. The least expensive of most solutions, the pads won't last as long as either of the previous two types above we mentioned.

The most universal pads are those made to fit over a chair leg and are often either rubber or soft plastic. No problem here with falling off like a self adhesive pad or a broken tap on pad. These slip on pads are great on most types of hardwood flooring.

Floor Type Does Matter

Clay Floors Recommends Bona Hardwood Floor Care ProductsRemember to consider the type of hardwood floor in your home, business, or commercial setting. Chair glides, and furniture pads are pretty much universal, and enable the chair and furniture to move on the floor. Felt, rubber, cork, plastic and metal are all materials out there in the marketplace, just make sure you ask your floor installer to make a recommendation for your particular hardwood flooring type.

  • Carpeted floors require a harder material like steel or plastic to work best.
  • Hardwood, ceramic tile floors require a material like felt and rubber to work best. If you use rubber be aware of ptential scuff marks and just be sure to eye the thinkness of the felt before purchase. If it is thick enough, you may use it on heavy furniture with no issues.
  • Soft floor like vinyl and rubber work best with rubber and plastic solutions.
  • Soft floors (vinyl, rubber). Felt, rubber and plastic work best.

Foot Traffic Needs Consideration

How often is your furniture moved? Say for entertaining, weddings, events, and other social gatherings. Just like foot traffic, how often furniture is moved may make a big difference if what you need to purchase to prevent hard wood floor damage from chairs and heavy furniture. There is a wide selection out there for furniture pads and thick felt or rubber will always work well in these types of situations.

Dining rooms, kitchens, high traffic areas, be sure to choose a good quality felt pad. It is always a great option, since plastic pads or glides do wear down over time. Be sure to examine whatever you use often. Depending on the type of kitchen or entry floor you select, if scuff marks will be an issue you probably wouldn't want to use rubber in those setting.

Family rooms with couches and sofas may have a higher degree of harsh treatment. Kids, pets, ploping down after a long hard day are all actions worth consideration since these slight movements are easy to cause damage especially over time. Choose your furniture pad wisely, and remember in this setting a rubber pad will do well and should restrict most movement.

In family rooms with couches and sofas, consider how hard the furniture will be treated. Will kids jump on the couch, or will you plop down in your favorite chair after a long day of work? These types of actions will cause small movements, so choose your furniture pad wisely. A rubber pad can do well in this scenario since it will help to restrict furniture movement.

Do You Want To Make Your Own Solutions For Floor Protection?

To minimize your costs, you may want to use items you have in your workshop for this task. While chair glides and furniture pads can be purchased at your local home improvement store, other options are available. Here are some simple solutions that can help if you have these materials lying around. For all of these options mentioned, a hot glue gun is a great way to make sure that these materials won’t slip or fall off your furniture. Be sure to find the type of glue you need and if used properly will be a good solution.

  • Using old scraps of carpet which can be cut and placed on furniture legs is one option. Just be sure the carpet side touches the floor.
  • Felt pads can be store-bought, any thick felt will do quite nicely.
  • Industrial grade Velcro, is another type of solution for protection. Be sure the soft side of the Velcro (looped side) as an effective furniture pad.
  • If you will be replacing towels soon, use these cut into the proper shape, provided the thickness will prevent any damage.
  • Leather is another soft, durable material that can be made into a good furniture pad, and is usually glued.

As with any solution remember to level the furniture once it's back on the floor. Uneven legs can scratch or gouges any of your floors. Regular proper cleaning schedules are absolutely necessary. Removal of all sand, grit, and dirt that can scratch the finish or make gouges on your floors is a basic requirement. No matter how durable your furniture pads are, they won’t protect properly if your floors are dirty.

If rugs will be placed down prior to furniture installation, be sure to properly clean the floor areas before you put the furniture down. Non slip under mats are always preferred to fit the rug size, and can be purchased where you purchase the rugs, or at any hardware store.

Hardwood floors, no matter what the type, are an investment for your home, business, or commercial setting. Keith Clay Floors is here to help you determine how best to protect them over the life of the floor. We prefer Bona products for cleaning, maintenance, and refinishing; and have had great success with them for over 30 years. Having a home with Saltillo tiles is quite a beautiful sight. Saltillo tiles are handmade clay floor tiles made in Saltillo, Mexico. These spectacular beauties are available in a wide range of warm, earthy colors and can be enhanced with equally beautiful Telavera accent tiles.

Mexican tile products for floors, walls, sinks, and ribbons is a fascinating experience for anyone who sees it. Most derive the name from the town of Saltillo Mexico, where it is made by hand from raw clay. Saltillo's most famous exports are Saltillo tiles and used for floors since the early 1900's.If you have just purchased a new home with Saltillo tile, or are considering adding a room or rooms with Satillo tiles, maintenance on this type of floor will be of interest to you.

Keith Clay Floors has been installing Saltillo Flooring since 1986.  Since Saltillo tiles are often unglazed and porous, they can absorb any water or cleaners they come in contact with. Natural products such as vinegar clean gently yet effectively without the harsh fumes and toxicity of chemical cleaners. Clean your Saltillo tile floor weekly to keep it looking its best.

To Keep Your Saltillo Tiles Looking Beautiful:

  • Sweep the Saltillo tiles thoroughly with a broom to remove any loose dirt or dust, and remove to the trash. Be sure to get in all the crevices where grit loves to hide.
  • In a 2-3 gallon bucket mix 1 gallon of warm water with 1/2 cut of white vinegar. Mix well.
  • Dip the mophead into the water, wringing it out till damp but not wet.
  • Begin mopping in one corner of the room and work your way across. If the floor is really dirty, you may need to replace the water a second or third time during the cleaning process to get maximum cleaning power.
  • Allow the tiles to air dry after they have been cleaned.
  • When the vinegar has been applies to the whole floor, empty the bucket and rinse. Refill with clean, warm water only.
  • Repeat the mopping process removing the vinegar from each tile as you mop.
  • Allow the floor to air dry.

Keeping your tiles clean is a weekly process. Using this vinegar solution is simple, affordable, and it cleans with no harsh chemicals. If your Saltillo tile is in a high traffic area of your home, and you are discovering that the tile is slowly discoloring and getting that dull look, it may be time to call Clay Floors and discuss a sealant for the tiles. Typically, the tiles are professionaly cleaned, sealed, then they can be maintained very easily by using the warm water plus vinegar solution.

New Flooring Installation

Wants Needs & Means

floors650Today in flooring, the debate continues among floor covering trainers and sales people. Should floor installation be about fashion, color or design?  Here at Keith Clay Floors we believe it is all 3; wants, needs, means and more. First and foremost should be the consideration about floor use. Keeping use in mind eliminates the flooring types that will not work in that location. Now you can move forward to the selection process. Budget is the next consideration. Clearly this will eliminate additional considerations, and as a consumer will be able to continue the education process and narrow even further the options left which will meet your needs best.

As a trusted sales advisor, Keith Clay Floors will be able to provide the first two considerations for floor installation easily. The next steps in the process are all about you and your wants. How we handle this last step does let you know you can trust our 30 years experience in the flooring industry. When it comes to exclusive services we at Keith Clay Floors do our absolute best to achieve the highest service possible. Whether is it installation, refinishing, or maintenance we can help. We take care of professional maintenance and explain the proper home care of your floor. We have the skilled personnel to install your floors professionally giving you complete satisfaction.

Really, all things considered in the selection process, it all comes down to the old wants, needs and means debate. Wants are what we would like to have. You may want a big beautiful home or a fancy luxury car. Perhaps you have retired and now want wealth and fame to show in your home or institutional location. Some just want a great family situation and a comfortable life style. That’s the category that I fall into. Needs are the bare minimum we need to make it through life, like food, water, shelter, adequate flooring, and in my case, a good TV set. Our means dictate what level of our wants can be achieved. Our means tell us if we can have the luxury home or just a low-rent apartment. Throughout my learning curve as a sales professional, our owners and staff have heard it all. The bottom line being, let's get the right floor, at the price you can afford, and that will meet your wants, needs and desires based on market availability.

Conscience based sales is usually what works best. While we can always show you that most expensive flooring solution, we don't always go for a close on that expensive type of floor. Often times if you only try to sell what makes you the most money as a business; you may leave a lot on the table. At Keith Clay Floors, we don't always try to sell you the most expensive first. While you probably deserve the best, in all good conscience you really need to have the best you can afford.

The interview process here at Keith Clay Floor is straight forward. Function of the area. Traffic and how much. Family size and pets. Life of the floor expectations, are you moving in or out. Will you plan on upgrading and remodeling after the kids move out, or will you retire after this installation. Once Clay Floors understands these specifics; we can get down to business. Getting what you want, need, and can afford.

Advantages of Saltillo

Saltillo Tile Floors Keith Clay Floors Dallas Texas

Clay Floors in Dallas is a professional flooring contractor serving the Dallas and North Texas communities for over 30 years. Floor Restoration, Refinishing & Installation is required in every type of contracted flooring, so if you are considering buying a home with Saltillo flooring, Clay floors would like this opportunity to let you know some advantages for this beautiful flooring. This tile in the above picture is only one option offered in the USA by Armstrong Flooring. Most stores and manufacturers of Saltillo style flooring are varied, and have so many beautiful options to choose from.

Saltillo could be the best choice, and surprisingly has the advantage of helping people who have allergies  being much more long lasting than carpets, linoleum, Pergo or even some wood floors. Keith Clay discusses some other benefits of Saltillo tile you will definitely find interesting. Education about the products we sell, and install is critical to your location. So why not consider these items before you buy.

Advantages of Saltillo & Telavera Tile:

  • Saltillo and Talavera Designs Will Enhance The Beauty Of Your Location
  • Saltillo Tiles Are Environmentally Friendly
  • All-Natural Product -  Saltillo is made from clay found in the Northern Mexico area of Saltillo,  is formed into tiles, dried in the sun and then fired in kilns. The positioning of the tile in the kiln determines the range in color from yellow to red with many tiles having a mixture of those colors.
  • Saltillo Tiles Are Hand Made -  Because the tiles are left to dry outside, you may see bug prints,  the footprint of a dog or child which makes for a wonderful conversation piece in your living room.
  • Saltillo Tiles Feel Good on Feet -  Since these tiles are made of clay, they are environmentally friendly and feel soft on your feet. Saltillo is warmer on bare feet in winter than ceramic tiles, and are cool and comfortable in the summer.
  • Saltillo Tiles Wear Naturally - Softer than ceramic tile, they do need to be sealed before they are installed. After installation, they can be re-sealed if you like. They are just as beautiful if they are allowed to wear naturally. Saltillo tiles have been made in Mexico and the Southwest for hundreds of years and many public places in those areas have wonderful Saltillo which has been allowed to age naturally.
  • Saltillo Tiles Are Easy to Care For
  • Saltillo Tile Hides Dirt - The warm brown color of Saltillo tends to hide the dirt. Even if a Saltillo floor is dirty, it can be hard to tell. That is a strong advantage for families with young children!
  • Care & Maintenance - Just Vacuum Sweep & Mop: In most cases a quick vacuuming or sweeping is all that a Saltillo tile floor needs to make it look fantastic. When dirty or sticky,  mop with water, diluted vinegar (1 part vinegar to 10 parts water), or a floor cleaner made for clay tiles.
  • Saltillo Tiles Can Be Re-sealed for Shine -  Your Saltillo can be shinier by a reseal every year or two. Re-sealing is optional and you may not even need it except in high traffic areas. Some Saltillo floors last more than 5 to 7 and have not been resealed.

Remember that Saltillo tiles are very unique. If different is important Saltillo is a very valid consideration for all Southwestern, Mediterranean, or French styles. These types of decor can enhance the beauty of these versitile tiles. Customize with Talavera, and these hand made painted tiles follow patterns which have been used for more than a hundred years. Creation of your own art and style instills a sense of history that can identify with your own creative taste.
